Hiring a Specialty Contractor for Your Commercial Fitness Space

Creating a commercial fitness space is an exciting project that requires careful planning and execution. Whether you're designing a gym, yoga studio, or fitness center, working with a specialty contractor can ensure a successful and efficient remodeling process. In this blog post, we will explore the benefits of hiring a specialty contractor like Beachside Interiors Design & Remodeling for your commercial fitness space.

I’m not exaggerating when I say I’ve been to THOUSANDS of gyms, fitness spaces, and health centers. Before I became a remodeling contractor and interior designer, I helped others achieve their fitness goals for 17 years of my life. First it started off as just a part time job while getting my degree in Kinesiology. Then, I coached athletes while I worked on my master’s degree. Then I taught as a Kinesiology professor at my alma mater, CSU Fullerton. Finally, I spent 12 years of my career as a Fitness Director at UC Irvine, building new fitness programs and spaces across campus, traveling to other UC schools, speaking at conferences…the whole bit. You could say I’ve completed a few laps around the preverbal block.

My point is that I can step foot into a fitness facility and be able to tell you if someone with any fitness expertise whatsoever designed the space. I can tell you if that person had any foresight whatsoever, or if they just winged it. Sometimes it’s painfully obvious, like lackluster lighting, poor placement of the locker rooms, or a chest press machine facing the “yes’s and no’s” machines (you know, the one where you open and close the hips/legs?). For those of us in the biz, we try to avoid letting patrons have a front row seat to crotch shots. That’s just one amusing example.

While setting up the actual equipment itself isn’t rocket science, the design aspect can actually be very nuanced. There are intricacies of creating a space that flows, a space that maximizes the footprint without making it seem too cluttered or difficult to move around in, all the while achieving the intended look and feel of the space, AKA the vibe check. There are also ADA requirements, which I hate to say are often overlooked. There are of course electrical and plumbing aspects to keep in mind. There must be an understanding of the psychology of lighting and color.

There are Unique Considerations for Commercial Spaces:

·      - Ideal location and design of front desk areas that are mutli-use and functional for a variety of tasks

·      - Flooring that is properly adhered to the substrate

·      - Thoughtful storage solutions and opportunity for growth

·      - Isolated and dedicated electrical receptacles for cardio equipment

·      - Mirrors at the proper height

·      - Equipment spaced properly for ADA guidelines

·      - Drinking fountain and locker room location

·      - Quality of gym equipment

·      - Intended use (yoga, performance, multi use space, recovery, etc. )

·      - Ample showers and restrooms that are separate from changing rooms

While this certainly isn’t an exhaustive list, it does shed light onto some of the intricacies of the space, and that it’s smart to work with someone who not only understands, but can see the details a million miles away.

There’s different types of fitness spaces - both in terms of the function (strength, HIIT, CrossFit, yoga, pilates, stretching, etc.), but also in terms of form (bright and airy, dark and moody, rustic and natural, etc.). Additionally, there are so many considerations and options for each type of space, that the average kitchen and bathroom contractor just won’t understand the WHY, which renders them unable to properly execute a functional space. I’ll dive into it below:

Expertise in Fitness Space Design:

Specialty contractors have extensive experience in designing and remodeling commercial fitness spaces. They understand the unique requirements of these spaces, including layout, ventilation, flooring, and equipment placement. With their knowledge, they can make informed decisions that optimize the functionality and aesthetics of your fitness space.

Efficient Project Management:

Designing and remodeling a commercial fitness space involves coordination between various trades and suppliers. From electrical and plumbing work to flooring and equipment installation, managing these processes can be overwhelming. A specialty contractor acts as a single point of contact, streamlining the project and ensuring seamless communication between different parties. They will oversee the entire process, saving you time and effort.

Adherence to Safety and Building Codes:

Commercial fitness spaces need to comply with safety and building codes, which vary from one jurisdiction to another. A specialty contractor is well-versed in these regulations and will ensure that your space meets all the necessary requirements. This includes aspects like accessibility, fire safety, proper ventilation, and electrical wiring standards. Hiring a professional ensures your fitness space is compliant and safe for your customers.

Guidance in Equipment Selection:

Choosing the right equipment is of utmost importance for a commercial fitness space. A specialty contractor (one who has a vast array of fitness knowledge) can help you select the most suitable equipment that aligns with your budget and goals. They have established relationships with equipment suppliers and can assist in negotiating better prices. Their experience in working with various equipment ensures that you get durable and functional options for your fitness facility.

Attention to Aesthetics:

Creating an inviting and motivating atmosphere is crucial for any fitness space. A specialty contractor understands the importance of aesthetics and can help you select materials and finishes that reflect your brand and create a welcoming environment. They will take into consideration factors like lighting, color schemes, and spatial arrangements to design a visually appealing fitness space.

Budget Management:

Taking on a commercial construction or remodeling project requires effective budget management. A specialty contractor will work closely with you to understand your budget constraints and provide cost-effective solutions without compromising on quality. They have the experience to prioritize expenses, negotiate with suppliers, and avoid costly mistakes, ultimately saving you money in the long run.

I’ve seen a lot of gyms and I’ve created a lot of spaces, so I know what to look for, and I know what it takes to get there. The fun thing about fitness is that there’s always something new that requires me to think outside the box and approach it with creativity and ingenuity. That’s the part I love most- making it YOUR dream gym. Not my dream gym. If you are interested in designing your own commercial fitness space, hire someone who has the experience and the passion to create a perfect space for your needs.
